How To Drive Traffic To Your Website - Use Social Bookmarking Site StumbleUpon

It’s no secret that you need to be where your customers are, and for this reason businesses have flocked to Facebook and Twitter to connect with potential customers. So it comes as a surprise that these may not be the most effective social platforms for driving traffic to your website. In fact, according to StarCounter Global Stats that tracks 3 million websites, they’re not even close.

Between August and September 2011, Social bookmarking site StumbleUpon accounted for a massive 50.35% of all referral traffic from the top social media sites. This outranked Facebook’s 37.4%referral traffic.

And it gets better. StumbleUpon have released their own facts & figures to entice businesses to join their site:

  • The “half life” of links (the time when a link has received half of the engagement it will ever receive) is 2.8 hours on Twitter and 3.2 hours on Facebook. How long is it on StumbleUpon? 400 hours! This is fantastic for businesses as it has the potential to drive traffic to your business much longer than these other sites
  • The average view of a StumbleUpon page is 25% longer than the average website page view. This means users spend extra time on absorbing the content in your articles.
  • After the initial 24 hour period, a popular shared link will typically generate no retweets on Twitter, 5% more likes on a Facebook page and a massive 85% more “stumbles” on StumbleUpon.

StumbleUpon has experienced incredible growth to reach 12 million users, but this is nowhere near Facebook’s 750 million or Twitter’s 100 million active users. Facebook and Twitter are both proven methods for promoting and building brand awareness, solid relationships with customers and an engaged community around your brand. At the same time, StumbleUpon is much more limited for creating valuable relationships with other users. For these reason I wouldn’t recommend you abandon your Facebook and Twitter community. Rather my suggestion is to get “Stumbling” as well.
