Happy Independence Day to all Americans!

Today marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

The Internet world is celebrating as well with Google putting their own unique spin on this special day. Today’s patriotic Google doodle is formed with the words “This Land Was Made for You and Me” from the Woody Guthrie folk song, “This Land Is My Land.”

Underneath the logo there is a hyperlink which says, “Celebrate freedom. Support a free and open Internet.” Click on this and you are re-directed to the “Take Action” page, featuring a video with quotes from well-known politicians and everyday people on life, liberty and digital democratization.

• The names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers. If independence had not been achieved, the treasonable act of the signers would have, by law, resulted in their deaths.
• The origin of Uncle Sam probably began in 1812, when Samuel Wilson was a meat packer who provided meat to the US Army. The meat shipments were stamped with the initials, U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for “Uncle Sam”.
