Do you get enough sleep every night?

If not, you’re part of the 2 out of 3 people who don’t feel well rested after only getting just under 7 hours of sleep on average. Or the 3 out of 10 people who fall asleep at work.

While we all know sleep deprivation can affect your attention span at work, what’s more alarming is the consequences of drowsiness on the road. According to an infographic by termlifeinsurance.org. Drowsy driving causes 1 in 5 car accidents.

Here are some more side effects of sleep deprivation:

    • It costs businesses approx $136 billion a year.
    • It lowers testosterone levels an average of 10-15%.
    • Getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night could add the equivalent of one cheeseburger a day to your diet.

So guys, put down your smart phones and turn off your computers/laptops and try to get that extra hour of sleep a night. It could save your life! Read more →

Pinterest, the new social network, is all over the place. Everyone is talking about it and if you’re a small business owner, it can be a great addition to your marketing strategy to promote your business online.

A lot has been said about the need for small businesses to harness the power of social media platforms, like Facebook and Twitter to drive traffic to their website and creating awareness about their brand to the masses.

Pinterest, the innovative visual scrapbook network is the latest addition to this list of biggies in the social media due to the following reasons:

Exceptionally High User Growth – Pinterest is one of the fastest growing standalone sites right now and boasted of 19 million users in March, 2012.

Great Referral Traffic – The outrageous popularity of the site is now spreading across the Internet communities even more as a recent report by Shareaholic revealed that the referral traffic from Pinterest is more than the referral traffic from Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube combined.

High Usage – The average time spent by a Pinterest user on the site came out to be 89 minutes in January 2012, which is only second to Facebook, and far surpasses the average user time on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Most businesses nowadays use social media for marketing their products or services. There are plenty of ways to advertise using social media, however when you’re doing it wrong, you’re pretty much wasting your time. In this article, we will tackle on the causes of social media marketing failures and how you can be successful in social media marketing for your business.

Causes of Failure of most Social Media Efforts

                1. Take more than you give or only take and not give

Social media is not a one-way street. If you treat is as so and if you don’t give value to your followers and only advertise your products/service continuously, then you will not build deep and long-lasting relationships with them. A good impression would also not be established. You should note that in order to know what your customers want, you should reach out to them and get to know them personally by engaging with them through social media. Show that you’re listening and that you’re not only there for promotion.

                2. Selling tone and not socializing

If your tone is much manipulative and indicative of only the selling part, then you’re social media page is only as good as a traditional static ad. If you miss the integral part of socializing, you might lose your customer faster than a constant sales pitch. Remember that to take into account to gain their trust first and become an active contributor in their community. As in a bank, deposit funds first—before you withdraw and take charge of “running your commercials.”

                3. No means of measuring success

When you have a blog that’s actively visited by lots of viewers, you should monitor its performance. Does it get higher bouncer rates each month? Are your profits in Google Adsense directly in ratio with the increasing/decreasing number of returning visits? Always be in the lookout for potential problems by using measuring tools. For instance, you can utilize Google Alert to watch your brand’s mentions on the Internet. Google Alert can notify you if something negative pops up as well, and it is your duty to make amends as soon as possible. Doing improvements show your audience that you care, you’re listening and you’re responsible for your own reputation. Read more →

5 Simple Rules To Master Viral Content

                  • Posted in: Social Media Marketing

Today, people are always in a hurry. Watch yourself as you skim through the daily newspaper. Oil prices went up, stock market went down, mass killing here, impeachment proceedings over there. That is why headlines in the newspaper are made so short and yet so full of relevant information so that even without reading the clipping, the reader would know pretty much about it. The thing is, we want to capture and make the reader continue reading. We want viral content.

Catchy lines, fantastic facts, social experiences that are too personal to pass — these are just a few things that will make someone pause for a while and continue reading an article in the paper or a small ad at the sidebar of your Facebook profile. So you got your target reader’s attention. What now?

WHO DO YOU WANT AS READERS?

Identify beforehand who your target readers are. Are they from Generations X, Y, and Zed or are you talking to the Baby Boomers? Fashionistas or sports enthusiasts? Identifying your audience will make it easier for you to know which voice to use when writing your article. You may even want to employ some lines or jargons that the group understands. Everyone wants to be a part of a group, and if you make someone feel that they are indeed a part of this group, then you might stand a chance to be heard. But this is just the beginning.

                  CONTENT AND NOVELTY

Keep in mind that whatever you do as part of your content marketing strategy, whichever topic you are writing about, keep the contents of your article interesting. Interesting- not in the sense that you will invent fictitious things to make people think you have a novel idea, but interesting in the sense that you have to present something new, probably a new angle that has never been seen before or some kind of a twist to a universally accepted fact.

                  KEEP IT SENSATIONAL

While Facebook has been able to attain $3 billion from display advertising, they have continually struggled with mobile advertising. According to recent studies by Facebook’s biggest API partners who have created platforms for businesses to efficiently buy Facebook ads, TBG Digital, AdParlor, Nanigans, and Spruce Media, it seems Facebook may finally be on the right track.

                    Mobile Strategy

In a move to monetize their mobile app, Facebook began offering a mobile-only version of Sponsored Stories just a few weeks ago. Sponsored stories appear in a user’s newsfeed and look like normal updates from their Facebook friends with the exception of the word ‘sponsored stories inside the update. Previously, both mobile and desktop ads were sold as one package as opposed to stand alone products.

New Facebook Feature: Edit Facebook Comments

First off, let me just say… FINALLY. Amongst the flood of changes from the new Timeline to the (useless) Ticker, Facebook has given users a new practical feature: the ability to edit Facebook comments regardless of how long it has been posted. Keep in mind, users will still be able to see the full edit history of the post’s comment history.

Previously, you had a window of a few seconds after posting the comment to edit it. If you left it too late, all you could do to was to delete the comment and start again. Personally, I regularly post through the Facebook mobile app, so I’m always falling victim to my phone’s ‘let’s auto-correct your word with something that doesn’t make sense in this situation’ when commenting. So I’ve had to copy, delete, paste, edit, then post my comment again many times.

While this is a step in the right direction, it still falls short of the options available in Google + which allows you to also edit original posts. There’s also no word on whether comment editing will be available in Facebook’s embeddable comment widget for websites or mobile app.

This feature has been rolling out from Thursday and should be available to all users within the next couple of days.
