It’s no secret that you need to be where your customers are, and for this reason businesses have flocked to Facebook and Twitter to connect with potential customers. So it comes as a surprise that these may not be the most effective social platforms for driving traffic to your website. In fact, according to StarCounter Global Stats that tracks 3 million websites, they’re not even close.
Between August and September 2011, Social bookmarking site StumbleUpon accounted for a massive 50.35% of all referral traffic from the top social media sites. This outranked Facebook’s 37.4%referral traffic.
And it gets better. StumbleUpon have released their own facts & figures to entice businesses to join their site:
StumbleUpon has experienced incredible growth to reach 12 million users, but this is nowhere near Facebook’s 750 million or Twitter’s 100 million active users. Facebook and Twitter are both proven methods for promoting and building brand awareness, solid relationships with customers and an engaged community around your brand. At the same time, StumbleUpon is much more limited for creating valuable relationships with other users. For these reason I wouldn’t recommend you abandon your Facebook and Twitter community. Rather my suggestion is to get “Stumbling” as well.
