To send an autoresponder or not to send an autoresponder. That is the question.
Autoresponders can be a great way share additional information about yourself, to thank them for following you, and establish a greater connection.
That is, provided you offer them something of value (e.g e-book, discount etc).
How it works
An autoresponder is simply an automatic direct message sent to new followers. When someone follows your Twitter account, they receive a pre-defined direct message.
Within SocialMotus, you can create a unique autoresponder, or multiple autoresponder for each of your twitter accounts.
Start with a thank you. Include some variation of thank you before your message to create authenticity e.g. “Thanks for following us”, “thanks for the follow etc”.
Think about your goals. The message you choose will depend on your own goals for using Twitter. It does make a big difference as to which approach you decide to take because when you lead your new follower to a targeted landing page that is relevant to your offer, you have chances of getting a better response.
Create multiple autoresponders. You can create multiple autoresponders to promote new products/services, marketing campaigns, promotional material, blog, newsletter and so on.
Provide value. Keep in mind, regardless of what your message is, you need to offer the reader some type of added value.
If you make it personal, you need to respond. By asking a question you need to ensure that you listen and react to the answers you’ll receive, and in a timely fashion too please.
Monitor your unfollow rate. Monitor your unfollow rate prior to implementing the autoresponder message, then monitor your Unfollow rate afterwards. This will help you understand if your autoresponder is adding value or not.
Track links. Send out a link with our smt’li shortener so you can determine how much traffic the autoresponder referred.
Examples
The good
“Thanks for following us. Just a reminder, we’re having a huge 20% off sale off all summer items. Click here to start shopping!” - Reminding users of sale or offering a special Twitter discount helps persuade those who are interested in your products to purchase.
“Thanks for following, as promised here’s the link to download my eBook on using Twitter for business” – Offering a free gift helps you build a connection with those who are not ready to purchase
“Thanks for the follow. Hope you’re having a great day! I’m happy to answer any questions. Send me a quick @ to say hello.” – If you’re not comfortable offering them a promotion, a simple hello and encouragement to tweet you goes a long way.
“Thanks for the follow. Remember “A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is – it is what consumers tell each other it is.” - Providing users with a sample of what they can expect from your tweets (quote, helpful tips, witty or funny tweets) will encourage them to pay more attention to your tweets.
