6 Free Internet Browser Extensions For Better Twitter Management

I’m always surprised at the lack of people taking advantage of internet browser extensions. Whether you have Firefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome, there are thousands of extensions that save you a lot of time and effort (and for free I might add). If you use social media as part of your business promotions or offer services to your clients, chances are you will be managing multiple Twitter accounts. Juggling these accounts can be cumbersome when you’ve got other more pressing daily tasks to attend to. That’s where these internet browser extensions offering improved Twitter management come in handy.

Silver Bird for Chrome & Windows

The Silver Bird Twitter management extension offers a lot of features packed into a pop-up box. While it is only available for the Chrome internet browser, it also comes in the form of a Windows app. Simply click on the extension icon in your current browser to perform quick Twitter tasks.

Silverbird uses tabs to separate your timeline, mentions, direct messages, favorites and lists with a search box for quick Twitter hashtag or keyword searches. You can also see the latest Twitter trends. It also offers great flexibility with complete control over which tweets you want to see such as direct messages, mentions, lists and your home timeline, as well as the option to have notices for new tweets pop up.

I personally love that the Silver Bird’s icon changes colour to notify you of new tweets directed at your Twitter account, with a corresponding number icon to show you how many tweets there are. You can even adjust the colour the bird becomes depending on what kind of new tweet it is to instantly distinguish between new mentions, retweets and so on. This is really handy for smaller businesses that don’t have a dedicated team to monitor Twitter mentions.

Tweetings for Chrome, Mac & Windows

Tweetings is almost identical to Silver Bird as they come from the same open source platform, with the added benefit of increased design and userability. The first thing you notice in the dashboard is the use of icons instead of words to represent each tab.

Tweetings introduces map previews creating a more dynamic Twitter feed, without loading extra pages.

It also displays two different colours at once for the new tweet icon for times when you receive new tweets in more than one form e.g. new mentions and direct messages.

Tweetfilter for all major browsers

Tweetfilter is a feature-enhancing Twitter tool, hiding your least favourable features and adding new ones. This increases userbility with the click of a few buttons in the settings menu. As its name suggests, it focuses on filtering Twitter content such as retweets, keywords, specific usernames etc. One of the common issues businesses have with Twitter is the unnecessarily frequent and irrelevant tweets shown on their home timeline. Tweetfilter removes this noise, ignoring topics you are not interested in without having to unfollow users, and bringing you tweets that matter. The best part is you can add custom filters with operators to target specific results.

TweetBar for Chrome

With TweetBar you can post tweets from your internet browser URL bar. It’s nowhere near as comprehensive as the previous Twitter management tools but it’s really handy if you want to send a quick tweet without heading to the Twitter site. All you need is to link your account to the extension and add Tweetbar to your browser bookmarks. Now every time you type “t” and hit space or tab in your URL bar it lets you type a tweet.

Once you start typing a count of your characters will show up in the drop-down bar so you never have to worry about your tweet being over the character limit.

Hootbar for Firefox

Hootbar essentially performs the same function as Tweetbar, except for a different browser. The advantage Hootbar has over Tweetbar is you can send your messages to multiple social networks including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as choose from different posting options.

Twitter Address Bar Search for Firefox

Twitter Address Bar Search is an official extension from Twitter for Firefox. Here you can post tweets from your Firefox browser and takes advantage of your URL bar like Tweetbar. However, it focuses on letting you search for a #hashtag and @username from the URL bar you choose, then automatically directing you to that page, rather than tweeting. While you can’t post tweets from the URL bar, the pinned Twitter App tab lights up when new Tweets arrive.
